Course Description

Folding Boom Truck Operator — Level A- (≤10 tonnes) with Rigging Certification

 Master the safe and effective operation of folding boom trucks up to 10 tonnes with this comprehensive 30-hour Level A- certification program. Designed for aspiring operators in British Columbia, this course combines essential theoretical knowledge with extensive hands-on practical training, including mandatory rigging certification. Successful completion prepares candidates for the final, industry-recognized assessments administered by Fulford Crane, ensuring compliance with WorkSafeBC, ASME, and CSA standards. 

Short Description

 Sign up now to become a certified Level A Folding Boom Operator in British Columbia. This 30-hour course is delivered as six 5-hour sessions you can complete at your own pace (16 hours theory, 14 hours practical). Training includes rigging instruction and certification, on-site Level B and Level A training provided by us, with final assessments and certification administered by Fulford Crane. 

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Load Chart Interpretation: Accurately interpret folding boom load charts (for units ≤ 10 t) and calculate safe rigging capacities.
  • Safe Setup & Stabilization: Perform thorough pre-operational inspections, and safely set up and stabilize units using proper outrigger placement.
  • Rigging Proficiency: Select, inspect, and correctly apply various rigging gear, and meet industry inspection and rejection criteria.
  • Lift Planning & Execution: Plan and execute complex lifts, including adherence to critical-lift procedures as mandated by WorkSafeBC.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Apply and adhere to all relevant safety requirements from WorkSafeBC, ASME, and CSA, with a strong focus on electrical safety controls.
  • Operational Demonstration: Demonstrate safe and efficient operation of the folding boom truck via timed practical tasks and the final assessment.o succeed.

Course Prerequisites

 To ensure a safe and effective learning environment, all participants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Age and Eligibility: Minimum age of 18 years and legal eligibility to work in British Columbia.
  • Literacy/Numeracy: Basic literacy and numeracy skills sufficient to understand course materials, interpret load charts, and complete written assessments.
  • Physical Fitness: Physical fitness commensurate with the demands of the job, including the ability to perform pre-operational checks, set up equipment, and handle rigging gear.

Course Content, Duration & Delivery

 

  • Total Duration: 30 hours
  • Delivery Format: Six 5-hour sessions; self-paced scheduling
  • Theory Component: 16 hours
  • Practical Component: 14 hours

Theory Modules (16 Hours)

 

 The theoretical component covers the foundational knowledge required for safe and compliant operation:

  • Load Dynamics: In-depth study of load charts, stability principles, and capacity calculations.
  • Rigging Fundamentals: Principles of rigging, sling angles, hardware selection, and capacity calculations.
  • Inspection & Maintenance: Detailed instruction on inspection/rejection criteria for equipment and rigging gear.
  • Safety & Regulations: Comprehensive review of WorkSafeBC requirements, including critical lifts, and applicable ASME and CSA standards.
  • Hazard Control: Focus on electrical safety controls and proximity hazards.

Detailed Rigging Course Outline

  • Crane and Hoisting Hand Signals
  • Load Weight Estimation
  • Location Of The Load Centre Of Gravity (COG)
  • Rigging Hardware and Appropriate Uses
  • Rigging Hardware Inspection and Rejection Criteria (Regulations Vary By Jurisdiction)
  • Use Of Rigging Tables To Select Appropriate Hardware For Hoisting
  • Sling Angle Capacity Calculation
  • Care and Storage Of Rigging Hardware
  • Common Hazards and Safety Around Cranes And Overhead Hoists
  • Lift Planning and Advanced Topics Awareness

Practical Modules (14 Hours)

 

 The practical component provides extensive hands-on experience under direct supervision:

  • Unit Setup: Proper setup procedures, including precise outrigger placement and stabilization.
  • Pre-Op Checks: Execution of detailed pre-operational inspections and documentation.
  • Hands-on Rigging: Practical application of rigging techniques and signaling/spotter coordination.
  • Operational Drills: Timed target exercises and simulated critical lifts to build proficiency and confidence.

Assessments & Certification

 The course employs a rigorous assessment structure to ensure competency:

  • Formative Checks: Internal formative checks are conducted throughout the course to monitor progress.
  • Rigging Certification: Rigging training includes an internal certification that is aligned with Fulford Crane's requirements.
  • Final Certification: Final practical and theory assessments are administered by Fulford Crane, leading to industry-recognized certification upon successful completion.
